GILLER PRIZE Last night I had the opportunity to work my first live TV event in years, the Giller Prize telecast on CTV. My job, coordinate the various guests in the house (like the Canadian Idol kids, Chantal Kreviazuk, the MTV hosts) and get them in front of the camera just in time for their interview with Mulroney's son. Very cool to see literary giants like Margaret Atwood and Alice Munro in the hizzy.
It reminded me of my first experience in TV as a volunteer on the YTV Achievement Awards. Live TV is such a trip, it's all about timing and communication -- every thing happens according to the clock and to the second. I dunno if I'd want to do that everyday, but it felt good to know that I still have the skill to pull off a live telecast in my back pocket with the rest of the tools that no one knows about.
Amidst the madness, I was able to pay attention to the actual Giller Awards, which are Canada's Literary Awards. Good to see the Chinese guy win it, especially in the room full of white people (like only white people read books?). Go, Asia!
Anyhow, the guy who won it is a 31 year old doctor, who somehow found the time (over 5 years mind you) to write a novel. It make me think with remorse all the days that I didn't sit down and write. My own prescription of 20 minutes a day of writing has totally fallen by the wayside now.
I absolutely think I have it in me to write a book.
But if I don't make time to sit down and write - it will never happen.
I gotta make time.
