We took a long car drive today, whenever I take a long car drive I get the urge to listen to "America" by Simon & Garfunkel on repeat. My favorite part in the song is when they're talking about playing games with the faces, because I like to do that too. I try and stories for all the people I see on the highway or at the Starbucks in a town I don't know the name of. I wonder if they're Christians or married, or if they have a common law marriage. I wonder if they're a lawyer or if they clean hotel pools for a living. I wonder if they're Mentalist fans or if they just watch CNN.
My other favorite part is when they're talking about everybody is looking for America. I like to pretend that we're all in search of something bigger and better than ourselves. Even though the person in the dumpy mini-van next to my slightly nicer one just might be going to the grocery store to pick up cigarettes and Foldgers coffee. Or, like us, they just might be on their way to a family reunion or to the airport, to pick up a relative.
The song evokes images of everybody on the high way ending up in the Grand Canyon, and we all realize that the America we were looking for was just an illusion.
I have weird thoughts after being in the back seat of a car for too long.
