He waits for her. Tonight will be the night that he reminds Patrick Jane of all the things that he’s forgotten. Who is he to think he could ever be happy? Who is she to think she could help him move on?
Jane should have known by now that nobody messes with his plans. This will be a lesson to the both of them, mess with the grand plan, and you will get burned.
So, he waits for her. She comes home eventually, and his patience pays off.
The first cut he makes in Agent Lisbon’s skin is euphoric. Her struggles and pleadings are absolutely delicious. It takes everything in him not to finish the job and kill her right then and there. He has to stop though; he needs Jane to watch her die. He needs to show the consultant that he means business. So, he quits while he’s ahead because he knows that it will make the reward sweeter.
He drags the knife through her flesh one more time for good measure and then dips his fingers in her blood so he can paint his signature mark where he knows Patrick Jane will see it.
He wants to hang around and see Jane’s reaction for himself. But he can’t risk it, he’s not quite ready to get caught yet.
It doesn’t matter though. He knows exactly how Jane will react. This will be worse than the last time, because he has allowed himself to love again, and he has lost again. Agent Lisbon is the final blow; it won’t be long until he finds him. Then it will all be over for real. All it will take is a little patience.
.
Her breathing is shallow, her pulse thread when he finally finds her. He wants to beg and plead with her to stay with him; he wants to call an ambulance. But he knows it won’t do any good, because death doesn’t take no for an answer.
He tries to find something to say, but words are lost on him and he thinks it’s too late to say the things that need to be said. Instead he holds her, not caring when a smear of her blood gets on his vest. While he holds her, she whispers the things he cannot say, she reaches out shaking, weak hands and wipes his tears away.
When she finally drifts away, he swears that he will finally get Red John. He cares even less about the consequences now that she’s gone.
He’ll find the serial killer one day, and make him pay for every single person that he’s killed. All it’ll take is a little patience.
