Does Life Beyond Undergrad Exist?

Nov 22, 2005 01:46

I have definitely decided to take time off and begin graduate school NO LATER THAN January 2007. I am still struggling with what I want to be doing after graduation. Ben said he was always impressed by how sure I was about my future. Well, we are all entitled to a time of doubt as a life-altering event looms in our future. So here they are in no particular order:

• Go to graduate school for english, preferably at Arizona State, Ohio State, University of Chicago or NYU
- Pros: Could lead to a Phd in english and possibly professorship, cheapest option as I will most likely have a GA position (knock on wood)
- Cons: How useful is an MA in english if I am not a professor, still need to take the GRE, find a writing sample, letters of recommendation, etc.

• Go to graduate school for publishing at NYU or Emerson
- Pros: Awesome job placement, exactly what I want to do, perfect cities to live in
- Cons: Unbelievably expensive, see above GRE, writing sample and recommendation concerns

• Work for McGraw Hill in Columbus
- Pros: Already been offered a job, easier not to move, real publishing career potential
- Cons: Who wants to stay in Columbus? I would be editing science textbooks for grade schools, shit pay, end up like everyone else I graduated with

• Work for a non-profit or political party doing fundraising (similar to what I do at Ohio State)
- Pros: Awesome connections=sweet job, I could feel good about my employment (raising money for babies or to cure a disease or beat Republicans!), potential to have fulfilling career
- Cons: Would probably mean staying in Columbus

• Go crazy and move to NYC or Chicago on a whim and live on ramen until a publishing house gives me a job.
- Pros: Fucking awesome plan.... I would be in a city I love, end of story
- Cons: I would be poor for a long time, which all my friends know would NOT be an option
