computer hell

Dec 07, 2005 11:41

Sigh. I get up this morning, turn on the ol' laptop, and the same frickin' message as from last September flashes on...no cable, no operating system. :joystick: Agh.

However, I've been a very good girl :flirt: since last Sept., so everything is backed up. Soooo, I suppose I just ship it off to Gateway again. I'm just waiting for their reply email. If it's like last time, I pay approx $50 to ship it roundtrip, they fix it and return it, in about three days or so from the time I send it off.

So now I'm looking at various linux distros just for fun. I've been using Suse for a while now. I like it, although it's main drawback seems to be in using rpm for package distribution and maintenance (I prefer apt because it's better at dependency resolution between packages). I like the concepts behind Ubuntu although they use Gnome instead of KDE (I'm more familiar with the latter, and it's better developed, although Gnome is improving fast). I like GoboLinux just because of its logo (look about half way down). But the distribution method (although addressing real shortcomings in un*x) means you have to do it yourself. Not for newbies or the faint of heart. Gentoo looks very interesting, but it takes two or three days to install because you compile EVERYTHING on your own computer (for absolute optimization, I think). Not something you check out when you have a half hour to spare :uhoh:. And I just spotted Symphony which is doing its own desktop (Mezza) which looks VERY nice. Hrm.

:linux:
