ASL rendition of “f*ck you”

I’m posting this because it seems to be actually popping up in a number of “non deaf” related places - friends on facebook, even Andrew Sullivan’s The Dish. I’m of two minds about it. Yes, the girl doing it is pretty cute doing so and I like seeing songs translated into ASL by and large. But she just looks like any of hundreds of students working on a class project for her ASL class. She isn’t actually very expressive (one of the common comments iss that she is) - her face doesn’t move a whole lot and it’s not part of her signing when she does. (Probably a different definition of “expressive” in deaf and hearing contexts). Don’t get me wrong - if she keeps up with her studies, I think chances are she’ll be a pretty good signer.

Perhaps part of it is that I had never even heard of this song or artist “Fuck You” by Cee-Lo Green until now, and the lyrics are particularly uninspiring to me. I mean, the same old dreck in the battle of the sexes and the hearts that’s been served up since, like, forever?

I don’t mean to pan her quite so much. Just surprised by what catches public (hearing) attention and what doesn’t. The performance of others such as Jon Savage, Signmark, and Sean Forbes are extraordinary but don’t seem to get the same kind of attention.

That all said, I’m picking up a few amusing signs from this… And she’s much cuter than Green.
