LJ: the things we are

Dec 01, 2010 11:20

The news is just flowing today, when I want to sit down and write on other stuff, these things keep pinging on my radar :-/

But a few notes of personal interest. This is an excellent point, and one we all need to remember (because, hey, sometimes we're the privileged and sometimes we're not, but we all gots some and we all don't gots some). So we all have stuff to work on. Maybe I'm a woman and I'm deaf and I'm queer -- but I'm also able bodied and I'm perceived white, and I have a professional, salaried job. You can’t get rid of privilege.

I have been asked more than once why I don't get a cochlear implant. As if I wanted to be a "proper" hearing person (I don't need fixing). As if cochlear implants were a miracle "cure" (they are not -- they do not actually work 100% for 100% of patients). But OMG: Failing Ugly: Advanced Bionics cochlear implant circuit goes haywire. If you want to see some of my previous posts about being deaf, I've resurrected my old deaf blog at this site. I'm hoping to migrate over there, once I figure out how to import my LJ posts there as well (the Livejournal Importer plugin is failing on me at the moment, but I'm working on it).

I referenced this the other day, but it really deserves a good long look. It's the best illustration of the range and type of sexual behavior as I've ever seen:
