The Royal Spanish Academy is lopping two letters off the Spanish alphabet, reducing it to 27. Out go “ch” and “ll,” along with lots of annoying accents and hyphens.
You know, from my perspective when learning Spanish, I thought it was amazingly fluid and tremendously straightforward in its spelling and accents. This is no doubt reinforced from a perspective that started out in English (where phonetic spelling is so far away as an ideal that it's laughable) and went on to the accent mangulation that is French (from which I still flee in horror) that I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around the fact that first of all there's Royal Spanish Academy in charge of this kind of stuff to begin with. Then that they thought this was enough of a troublesome issue to fix. I thought it was cool that words with CH came organized after words beginning with C and so on...
