washed away

So I think my house has it in for me. Because it seems to insist on scheduling its disasters while I am away. I had an otherwise lovely weekend spent with friends, working on various projects ranging from a website to teaching them a bit about putting together a vegetable garden. But when I was about to leave to come home yesterday afternoon, I checked my cellphone and discovered a message on it from one of my roommates about a burst water main. When I got home an hour and a half later, I discovered someone had called the city in to shut it off, but my best estimates are that it was gushing for at least six hours, up to perhaps ten. I do not want to see my water bill next month o.O. I called over my favorite handy man (actually I lined him up on the way back home yesterday) and he was here this morning to dig it out and repair it. I'm also going to put in a curb downstream of it to try and keep it from flooding the neighbor's side yard should it go again. A few years back there was a leak (crack in the pipe at a different point, but down by the water meter as well) and it was just a leak, took a few weeks for all of us to figure out what was going on and why their side yard was all damp. So I figure I need to do something to show I've thought about preventing more trouble, although a curb would be good for this sort of problem but not for the leak as of last time. Meh.

So that's for the joys of home ownership. I tell you, every time I play hooky from my house on the weekend, I get payback :-P
