this is why

The McCain campaign has crossed the line between tough negative campaigning and inciting vigilantism, and each day the mob howls louder. This is by Frank Rich who wrote about the (non) response to Katrina.

McCain could promise me we'd be out of Iraq tomorrow and I wouldn't vote for him
He could promise me the economy would be fixed in the next six months and I wouldn't vote for him.
He could promise me any of a dozen things I desperately want for this country and I would not vote for him.

Because what he and Palin have been doing in their rallies will destroy the very soul of this country.

ETA:
Tumulty's report raises serious questions about whether or not John McCain is using campaign rhetori that not only depart from recognized moral boundaries, but risk igniting actual violence.

I should say I am not shocked, per se. There is a thick ugly vein of racism bound up in this country, perfectly visible to anyone who cares to see it. I am, however, angry at it being tapped like this, given more life, instead of dying by inches (not fast enough, mind you, but at least in the correct direction) as it has been.
