Waiting to hear back from a caseworker today about work. I'm nervous, yet detached too. I'm a wee bit ticked that a guy has had paperwork in for the past three years, and has only been there for a few weeks each year due to back problems. Now the contract has changed, so people can't do that anymore. I understand it cuts down on the game players, but people who have an injury or illness that is an acute thing are getting the shaft. I totally agree that if you don't have use of a body part required in a job, why are you taking it? I've wondered that about a couple of those people. Which is why if my back doesn't heal soon, I may have to get a less physical job. My problem is that the one guy has played the game long enough that he is now at retirement age, so he has had the better part of three years off with full pay till his sick days are used. Now he can just go retire into the sunset after playing this game, and when I did his day shift work on overtime the first few years I was there, it was a joke. Now he has alot more to do, and of course, his back and knees can't handle it. And he hasn't retired yet, because the package probably wasn't good enough yet. I was doing a great job, according to my boss, but that doesn't come into play. So yeah, the pay has been good, but I've learned there are downsides to having a union. I'm not against them, some places need them. But if it's pay vs peace of mind and selling your soul, I'll take peace of mind. People voted yes becaues they saw $4500.00 and then they listened after they voted yes and then started bitching. I didn't even think we would see the money, but we did. Some of the people still have their jobs, but if the time or days off gets changed on them, they have to quit or have really understanding families. That's not job security. That's turning your life upside down with minimal notice. Sorry for the long post, but these issues have been on my mind since April.
