TEEN WOLF WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME:

I spelunked around in wikipedia for a while, looking up stuff about the "threefold death" mentioned in last night's episode.

Threefold Death: not something made up by Jeff Davis, but like many Jeff Davis things, it's a mishmash.

Threefold death in Celtic lore (attested to by Romans, so take with salt)
- Almost always hanging, drowning, and "wounding"/impalement.
- Possibly a way of sacrificing to three gods, three functions, see Trifunctional Hypothesis.

Not a terribly rewarding avenue; none of the three gods are terribly interesting (Taranis is associated with sun/thunder/wheels, Esus is a woodsman, and Teutates is a tribal protector.) Possibly tie-ins: hanging is kinda like strangling, and maybe the life-guard's practice dummy is a call-out to drowning?

Norse Lore:
- Something to do with Odin and hanging on a tree? Lots of the stuff here is behind a paywall. But, Emily is arguably found hanging from a tree.

Iron Age Stuff:
- this is mostly based on bodies found by archaeologists, and here we have the closest match to the means of death. The "Lindow Man" was found with his throat cut, strangled, and with his head bashed in. Unfortunately, the people who did this really didn't leave any documentation on their motives (one theory is that the Lindow Man was robbed by really excitable robbers who wanted to be really sure he was dead.) Some archaeologists think the overkill was because the death was sacrificial in nature. To whom? NO ONE KNOWS.

So, I would put my money on the last one, because of the rich terrain for making shit up, except that Jeff Davis does not seem at all deterred by the presence of actual factual knowledge counter to the story he wants to tell, and I'm betting he's going to go for something "wolfy" sounding.
