Be Strong. Be Gentle. Be Beautiful.

I do have some vaguely pessimistic thoughts on whether these sort of introductory courses ever reach their intended audiences, or if they are essentially preaching to the choir, but if you are looking for a good feminism 101 type resource, www.feministfrequency.com clearly, calmly, and convincingly explains basics of feminism without using the jargon and shorthand that feminists can use when talking among themselves. Useful if you have a young cousin you're trying to explain feminism to, or if you don't feel the need to explain to someone why "ironic" sexism is still sexism. (Also an OTW member? Ms. Sarkeesian? Have I read your fanworks?) Her Youtube channel videos are all close-captioned, which is sexy as hell. Although her stuff is pitched entry level, it also covers a variety of topics and more experienced feminists are likely to find a discussion they enjoy; her "Tropes vs. Women #5: The Mystical Pregnancy" cites Laura Shapiro's vid, "Stay Awake." So I am inclined to like her.

Following on a theme, via, I think Lauredhel? (I've lost the source this link) takebackhalloween.org advertises itself as "for women with imagination", meaning basically women's costumes which can not be described as "Sexy __________" although some of theme are certainly sexy. The "Notable Women" section includes instructions for dressing up as Lise Meitner, and Madame C. J. Walker (as well as Ada Lovelace. Oh dear. Victorian Fashion, Two-Dee Goggles is utterly right in its estimation of you,) The "Goddesses and Legends" section seems, er, potentially appropriative, but their sub-heading: "No matter what your cultural background, there's a goddess in your closet," perhaps indicates a suggestion to look to one's own traditions.

Which reminds me of "Of Another Fashion", a tumblr "alternative archive of the not-quite-hidden but too often ignored fashion histories of U.S. women of color." A gorgeous, compassionate series of photographs, curated by Minh-Ha T. Pham.
