later, ask me what I think about keen little gadgets in the shape of dismembered women. (Guess.)

So the other night, more or less by accident, kphoebe and I ended up watching Criminal Minds together. I had read the one sentence TV guide blurb, but honestly I had more or less forgotten about that by the time I started watching. Twenty minutes twenty three seconds later, (by my chat log) we were on AIM together boggling at the bafflingly insensitive ( Read more... )

And, as a lot of people have pointed out, what on earth do these people do with their girl-children? Kidnap them husbands? Eat 'em? Maybe dingoes ate 'em.

My roommate asked the question of "but what about the girls" as well. We've spent some time coming up with new horrible options. Infanticide is the "winner" so far.

That was my assumption. Abandonment to death or charity.

Also, I hated the episode; I thought it was poorly done on a lot of levels, not just the total racist fail though that trumped everything else.

Yeah, the thing where Jordan called out Prentiss on using “the victim” felt clumsy and forced to me, because I don't think Prentiss is likely to distance herself that way, and it felt like she did it just so Todd could call her on it. And also, the episode was totally fail at profiling. No profiling was done, they solved it mostly by 1) the account by the first victim and 2) the hair which linked the mother to the girls disappearing enabling them 3) to alter a picture and 4) pick her up at the mall and then 5) bad-cop/good-cop her into giving them information. There's nowhere in there that knowing they're Roma even actually helped them solve the crime.

But I didn't want to bring up “AND ALSO THE WRITING WAS BAD” because I sort of wanted to keep the focus narrow.

Yeah, "AND ALSO THE WRITING WAS BAD" is kind of... it's TV, dude. What do you want? <.<;;

I've been really cringy over things this season.

I'm glad to find SOMEONE saying "wow, that was full of fail." I researched Rromani history for a novel and discovered the depths of the racist evil directed at them, so this show just pained me from start to finish. Any time "gypsies" (or "travellers") come up, it's generally a recipe for "wtf" and "fail".
