Escape from the planet of the Snippets

Harriet_Spy asked for Bruce and wee Dick. This, um... is sort of in that time period? Suitable for all ages.

He blinks as he comes into the sun. "Alfred, what are you doing?"

Alfred straightens himself up, leaning on the shovel a little for support. "It would appear I am separating the lilies, wouldn't it?"

Bruce looks at him, and Alfred looks back. Bruce feels approximately ten years old for a moment, before he frowns it off. "Alfred, we do have gardeners."

"Do we, sir? How extraordinary that the lilies are crowded, then."

"And they're due out here tomorrow."

Alfred grimaces, and then cracks his neck in both directions. "Truthfully, I had thought it would be best if someone was on hand to give the young master immediate medical attention if he should fall. But he seems quite competent, and the lilies caught my attention."

Bruce looks up the side of the building to see what acrobatic feat Dick is in the midst of now, but he can't see him.

"The tree, sir."

Bruce turns around, and still can't see him. Stepping back a little, he can see a branch moving counter to the wind, about sixty feet up. "Is that... safe?"

"Young boys frequently climb trees, sir. Or do you think it unsafe for a child to be swinging about several stories above the ground?"

"I know the buildings are solid. But is that... Is it going to support his weight?"

"That is a white oak, sir. It has been in that location for four hundred and sixty years. The proposed location of the manor was moved so that it might not be disturbed." In response to Bruce's blank look he adds, "it can support considerably more than Master Dick's weight."

"Bruce!" shouts Dick from up the tree, and then, by the movement of the branches descends ten feet, and then another ten, rapidly. "You can see Gotham from here! You can see everything!"

"More than?" asks Bruce, toeing off his shoes.

"Do try not to ruin your trousers," says Alfred.
