+the collar:
This is the very bulky, blinking, mechanical device around her neck. As Minatsuki was imprisoned for a life sentence at DW, this collar is impossible to remove and doses out a daily amount of poison. If she doesn't eat a bitter, candy shaped antidote once every three days, she dies. Luckily, the hotel seemed to decide to provide her with a huge bag of them.
+branch of sin:
The whole reason she was given the death sentence was for killing her father with her Branch Of Sin, which is her ability to - if she has an open wound that is bleeding - activate her power and create several whips branching from her hair. The more she bleeds, the weaker her attack. And although this can be a very deadly skill, she is rather physically weak when compared to other people.
+hummingbird:
If you're familiar with the movie 'Death Race', Deadman Wonderland was much like that in the essence that they pitted the skilled/special/Deadman or those with Branches of Sin against one another for viewer entertainment. Each member was given a bird name to symbolize them to the public eye, and Minatsuki was known as the 'Hummingbird', as she is very, very fast.
+the facade:
Mina is manipulative. She will often play the diminutive, weak, and girlish role if she thinks you have a hero complex and need to protect her. She did this to Ganta, only to injure him and attempt to kill him the next day, so do not expect any sort of real affection to be shown in the same simpering, shy, blushing ways she will fake it with. True affection with Minatsuki is much like a little boy throwing rocks at the girl he likes; yes, she is a little boy. Please, for the sake of plots, etc, do not simply assume your character can tell something's off with her. OOC information is not IC information.
+how would she use her abilities?:
Generally, Minatsuki would only ever really use her branch of sin in a fight or to kill someone. Most fights she'd pick and fight with her bare hands, but if there's the definite feel that she's going to loose the fight in hand to hand combat - and even then the branch of sin would just be an unfair advantage on her part (which is really the reason she likes it so much). As for the facade, that she uses quite often but is rather picky about who she delegates time toward assuring they think she is a sweet little girl. it takes energy to be innocent when you're realistically a psychopath, so only those who she thinks she can really get to do anything for her if they feel she's the damsel in distress will really see that fictitious "sweet side" of her.
canon history:
Minatsuki Takami started her life well-adjusted in a comfortable family comprised of herself, her older brother Yoh, her mother and her father. This picturesque lifestyle didn't last long unfortunately, and at the tender age of seven Minatsuki's world was destroyed by an earthquake so large it sunk 70% of the city and struck her home city while she was at home with her mother. Like any scared child would do, she reached out and clung to her mother's arm for support, but instead of being comforted and protected, she was shaken off and left for dead as her mother ran for cover with only her own interest. In that split-second moment, frozen with shock, Minatsuki realized that humanity was comprised of selfish people and that no one was really good - nor did they deserve the benefit of the doubt - and no one was ever really looking to do something for other people; it was all about them. She remained in that frozen position as the flower nursery around her crumbles, and was eventually knocked unconscious.
When she awoke, however, Minatsuki still went toddling out into the destruction caused by the earthquake, not really sure what she was expecting to find or even if she would find anyone. One can imagine her surprise when, after an hour or two, the shell shocked girl happened upon her own mother - alive and crushed under a huge slab of cement. Minatsuki crouched next to her mother and, on the pretext of comforting the frightened woman who had disregarded her daughter completely, her Branch of Sin activated and she murdered the older woman. In her own words, that was the moment she 'became a liar.' When her brother and her father founder her after the murder, and they concernedly checked her over for wounds, her father asked her where her mother was, she answered with a rather deadpan "I don't know. Shopping?"
After that moment, Minatsuki's personality turned ugly. She manipulated the people who loved her into giving her what she wanted without even bothering to care for their well-being. Outwardly, she was the same sweet and innocent girl she had always been - if not somewhat the victim as her father turned violent and abusive. Inwardly, she was a monster who hated humanity and thought everyone who died deserved what they got, and especially deserved what they got if she gave it to them. After the death of their mother, Yoh and Minatsuki became the center of their father's life, but that attention soon turned into something ugly as he started to physically abuse them; Minatsuki more than Yoh, as she was nothing but a scared, quiet girl who would tell no one an Yoh was a young man - as well as three years older than his sister. Minatsuki killed more than just her mother throughout the years as well; a dog who trampled her flowers, a counselor who attempted to help her, and she probably maimed or murdered a few children or neighbors that got too close. As time wore on, Minatsuki got rather bored of her current life. For all the abuse and murder that surrounded her, things had gotten a little too comfortable, and she had gotten older - which meant the abuse from her father took a slightly sexual turn. He never actually raped her, nor did he even try before the teen put events into motion when it came to devising his death. It was just a survival instinct to take out the attacker before he hurt her anymore.
Minatsuki set up a scene for her over protective big brother to walk in on which involved her naked and their father looming over her. On the day of their mother's death, Yoh had sworn to protect his sister, and had tried his best over the years. But at the sight before him, he was furious, and immediately attacked their father with a box cutter. However, Yoh did not kill Mister Takami. He was the only on in the physical scuffle, but Minatsuki activated her branch of sin to finish off the abuser, and killed their father without harming Yoh - and leaving him rather confused as what had happened. He, however, then hurried to get rid of the body - the two devised a scheme to burn it and the house and disappear as if they had died, as well. After all, Yoh was seventeen. He could take care of them - or so they thought.
But as it turned out, fires caught a whole lot of attention from the cops and neighbors, and the two were apprehended before the evidence was all destroyed. Medical Examiners were rather perplexed about what had happened, but decided the murder of their father had been Minatsuki's fault, and they threw the two at the court systems. Yoh could not acceptably defend his sister (he was in a rather disoriented state of mind and could not remember actual events that had transpired) and in the end she was sent to prion and he else where. For about a month, she was a regular inmate in regular cell, and eventually separated from the rest of the general prison population for reasons that were never exactly made clear to her cellmates or any of the other people she'd met (not that many missed her anyway), but perfectly clear to Minatsuki. She had been singled out for her unique ability - the branch of sin - and was forced into a twisted game where she and others like her were forced to fight like gladiators.
Minatsuki spent two years of her life in the secret, underground G-sector of Deadman Wonderland, forced to participate in the Carnival Corpses - the sick, gladiator esque spectator sport mentioned above. She lost every time, but was lucky enough to have to forfeit nothing vital in the punishment game, loosing nothing more than a kidney and a bit of stomach lining. Her specialized branch of sin was a whip created from her blood and hair, and her superior speed earned her the name "Hummingbird", which became her avatar displayed when she fought others and was the face spectators bided on. Her second year in the game, she devised an excellent idea, and "befriended" one of the men she knew she was going to be fighting later and instigated a sort of faux relationship with him, which he fell for genuinely. The night before they fought, he offered to throw the fight - no one could win or lose if they threw the fight, right (which was wrong, but neither knew that)? She agreed to it and the two "consummated" their "marriage" with her being a partially nonconsensual partner. The next morning, however, when they were pitted together, she slit his stomach open. Forget the rule that states that you're not supposed to kill your opponent; Minatsuki was disgusted with him, and got no greater pleasure than seeing the look of hurt and betrayal in his eyes as he vainly tried to push his insides back in his gut. Minatsuki just laughed. It was a sick and horrible way to spend the tender teenaged years, but Minatsuki survived, keeping her innocent facade in place everywhere except the arena until the age of seventeen.
After two years in jail, two years in the Carnival Corpse when eventually she was paired against newcomer Ganta Igarashi-- code name Woodpecker. She was intent to play Ganta just as she had done the last fool that had bought her facade, and even got as far as getting him in the arena and injured grievously before exposing her true face and showcasing just how much of a psychotic little bitch she was. Ganta was horrified, and Minatsuki couldn't care less - she was winning. During this fight however, Minatsuki's brother Yoh leaped into the arena to protect her. After their arrest, Yoh had been resentlessly working to procure her freedom, and had even gone so far as to befriend and endanger Ganta earlier to earn 'cast points' (prison money) credits he was told he could later use to purchase his sisters freedom. At first, Minatsuki defaulted to her sweet, innocent girl personality with him, until it was revealed that Yoh knew all along that she wasn't as pure as she claimed to be, and that she had killed people mercilessly. He claimed not to care, however, vowing to continue to protect her like he always did. Minatsuki was very conflicted by this - and had a little bit of a psychotic break. She proceeded to strangle her brother with her whips while fighting off Ganta at the same time; she used her big brother and protector as a human shield for lack of a better word, and was only defeated when Ganta severed her hair, hit her in the back of the head with a ricocheting bullet from his gun-like branch of sin and headbutted her. Minatsuki lost, and passed out.
After the fight, while she was recovering, Minatsuki, Yoh and Ganta were in a room when a rather surprising mini-earthquake shook the room. Yoh immediately leapt to his sisters aid, injuring himself to protect her from a falling bookcase. Surprised by his actions-- more specifically, the fact that someone would risk their well-being to save her-- she asked if he was okay, and when Yoh said he was fine, she was promptly irritated by this lie. Due to her loss in the Carnival Corpse, she was set to lose another organ to the science department. Fearing it would be something vital and would result in a fatality - this punishment game was supposed to be a gamble of life and death, after all - Ganta and Yoh both scrambled to find ways to save her, and for the first time in years she allowed herself to get her hopes up, only to berate herself - fearing that they would just let her down again, as most everyone else had in her life. They were dashed at first when it seemed like both of them failed to help her in time but when the lottery machine that determined which body part she would have to give up landed on 'hair,' she was genuinely relieved. Nagi had stepped in with his semi-resistance force and altered the results of the game, rigging the machine to pop up 'hair', as it was the least vital part of her body, and even ironic considering her power.
personality:
As for Minatsuki's personality... well, to sum it all up, Minatsuki is a bit... twisted, and it all started with her mother abandoning her during the Great Tokyo Earthquake. She curses, she's violent, she's vulgar, she's manipulative, and she takes enjoyment in seeing other people in pain so much that she actually proclaims to get off to it. She puts on a front of people, acting like a cute, innocent, defenseless little girl around those she thinks would fall for it and become overly involved with her matters, and when she turns right around after successfully ensnaring them, the teen simply laughs at the shocked expressions they make - enjoying the fact she pulled the wool so far over their eyes that they were blinded completely to the sick person she was. Minatsuki is, first and foremost, a child. And insane child, sure, but a kid all the same. Her antics are childish, her actions (while violent) are childish, and her reasoning is childish. It would be reasonably safe to say that the origin of all her violence and hostility is her mother - and that her psyche is the typical mold for a scarred child. More realistically, she would have been more likely to develop a rather crazy split personality with the childhood break of being practically rejected by her mother, shaken off and left for dead, but when it comes to Minatsuki, she's rather well off - sure she is a pathological liar and hostile and downright rude, but a good amount of the time she is able to hide it all behind the facade of being a cute, sweet, innocent, infantalized teenager with a traumatizing past and the largest brother complex this side of Ouran Host Club.
This mostly changes during her fight with Ganta, and her subsequent reunion with her brother, Yoh. For the first time in years Minatsuki witnesses someone showing a concern for her well-being despite the fact that they know how much of a monster she is. The genuine concern that Ganta and Yoh express 'mess with her,' in her own words, and for the first time she allows herself to feel a glimmer of hope, which she fights very hard to surpress because of the fear she is just going to get shaken off and left again. This hope is rewarded when Ganta convinces Owl to rig the slot machine that would determine which body part Minatsuki would give up to land on hair. For the first time in years, Minatsuki sees a glimmer of humanity she thought didn't exist, even if she'll later deny ever having seen it. This event doesn't completely cure her mistrusting ways, however. She still remains emotionally reserved (refusing to claim that she has friends), broken, angry, violent, and a bit messed up, but she doesn't display psychopathic tendencies nearly as heavily as she did before - it seems that her brother being around her in G-sector calms her down a great deal, as he is one person who couldn't care less if she's crazy; for in his sister-complex eyes, she can do no wrong. She still takes pleasure in either witnessing or causing pain for others - once a sadist, always a sadist - and she still has doubts about humanity and finds it difficult to trust people, but she's slowly coming around. Despite the fact that she has a long way to go, it finally seems like Ganta, Yoh and the other Deadmen are having an effect on her.
Even so, this doesn't mean Minatsuki doesn't have her relapses. She has her buttons, and she tends to get very, very emotional and violently enraged when those buttons are pressed. One of those buttons used to be the way her mother abandoned her, and although bringing up the incident might cause her to go off angrily and beat someone up to make herself feel better, she's finally come to terms with it - but since that comes later in the series than I am taking her from, we'll leave it at that. Another one of those buttons is her trust issues. Minatsuki might not trust fully, but when what little trust she has to offer is earned, she gets pissed when it's broken; and by pissed I mean murderous. Minatsuki's mindset is very fragile, and even if she's making progress, it's fully possible for her to relapse completely (as she almost did when Ganta 'betrayed' the Deadmen and helped a Forgery - but again, not in canon time frame).
Minatsuki isn't completely and 100% defined by her violent, broken, and distrustful ways, though. Like any teenage girl, she takes pleasure in certain feminine things. Her prison cell overflows with flowers, which she cares for diligently and threatens to maim those who try to destroy it. She has a soft spot for cute animals, though she tends to get grumpy about this. Despite her vulgarity and awkward sexuality, she blushes when people walk in on her changing or something that does not involve her flashing them purposefully or that she can not "correct" by beating the shit out of them.
She is ultimately a broken child that will never be fixed. She does not look forward to the future, and does not like people unless they are unknowingly under her thumb. She doesn't believe in love, trust, magic, or vampires - and stands very form in her beliefs. Love = violence. Again with the fractured childhood, she has never really had a good example of love, whether familial or romantic. Sex =/= love. Brother =/= love. Daddy =/= love. Possible ships =/= love. No. Brother, sex, ships, and daddy = a means to an end, even if she herself is not sure of that end.
