Just kidding.
So after the fight with Rafiki, Icarus is all “sup guys tell the enemies I died because that will give us an advantage of them thinking of me as dead” and so Baroona and the rest are like “well if you say so…….” And then apparently after rescuing Rafiki’s daughter and shit cut to Michael going all “curse you people who saved the Daraak princess!! My plans are ruined!” And then after that it’s revealed that Chronos is getting Daraak reinforcements! Hooray for working together!
So cut to another scene and apparently the mercenaries are moving to a region called the Lauren Region. Which is someplace I don’t fucking know because the author has never brought it up before goddammit. But that doesn’t matter because they’re moving there to go build ships so that they, along with the Chronosian army and everyone else Michael has pissed off (aka, fucking everybody), can go invade Isiris (aka Michael’s homeland) in a decisive battle and shit. Also at this point Icarus comes back to be all I’M ALIVE and shit. So yeah. Good times.
So they all board the ships and sail off to Isiris and the wholly army gets split off into three sections, only to regroup later in some place called the Burokan Region. Turns out the Burokan Region is where most of Isiris’s supplies come from, so by taking it… well. You get it. Anyway, Baroona and the guys go with this other mercenary troupe called the Marlen Mercenaries and do their thing. After they take the Burokan Region, they head on to basically steal all the cows from all the villages on their way to some FUTURE BATTLEFIELD called the Daekim Plains.
On the Daekim Plains, Icarus and Michael meet before the fighting starts to talk and Icarus brings Baroona and Ares with him. Michael is basically like BLAHBLAHBLAHI’MADICK and Ares fumes a bit and then they both go back to their respective sides and the fight starts. The fight includes bulls and elephants and all around crazy shit until Icarus decides to split the army in two, using himself as bait to lead Michael to some place called the Sykhan Ruins which are these old ruins that Icarus uses to his advantage to hide in and do tactical shit. Baroona, Douglas and Robin the Archer are assigned to Icarus as his bodyguards so they go there too. Anyway, Michael follows the troops and fights happen and then he sends one of his best fighters, Carnival (remember that guy from like, really early on?) to go kill Icarus who is hiding in a bigass tower thing. Baroona is like “fuck that shit” and tries to stop Carnival, but Carnival is a sneaky bastard and slips past him and stabs Icarus in the shoulder. Baroona catches up, they fight, Baroona wins with the help of Icarus. And then he throws the king and himself out a window because there are enemy troops coming. So then they’re outside and they can see Michael all on his high horse and then Robin sneaks into the battle and fires an arrow that almost kills Michael. Of course he gets up close to do so, so he pretty much dies instantly. Baroona is all NOOOOO and then takes his body off the battlefield. Ares pops back in and does some shit in anger but that doesn’t really matter. Michael retreats because lol he’s dying and hurray! The battle has been won!
So they move on to their next challenge which is crossing this big fucking river in front of the Isirian army’s main fortress. While most of the army crosses in log boat things, the mercenaries for some reason or another get catapaulted across! Literally… catapaulted. Anyway they arrive across the river and Ares slips into the fortress (which is actually the capital city of Isiris, where Michael’s palace is) while Baroona and the rest are left outside. A while later, Baroona receives a message from Ares that says that Ares will open the gate that night for the Chronosian army to come in. Baroona gives the message to Icarus and they have a plan. So Ares opens the gate like promised and Douglas, Gohu and Baroona slip into the city. So the three of them rush to go help Ares out. After that, the gate closes and no more Chronosian soldiers can get in so shit sucks for that. But then a few minutes later Ares and Baroona along with this white haired Black Knight (aka elite Daraakian soldiers) reopen the gates and everyone’s all “yaaaay”.
So they leave that place they were and go towards the palace where Michael is until the only remaining Michael bodyguard (who is a lady!) is all “come here Ares I will take you to Michael so you can kill him… and shit” and Ares is like “dohokay”. Baroona, Douglas and Gohu chase after Ares because seriously... Unfortunately, they don’t get there in time and Ares is already inside some big chamber fighting Michael one-on-one so Baroona is left to fight the woman bodyguard and Douglas defends his back. So the fight’s a tough one, but Baroona manages injure her enough to incapacitate her and then it’s revealed that she’s actually the woman that Gohu is in love with! And then she gets kastabbed by this jerky king/general guy and the three mercenaries are like “dude you are such a dick”.
Then they all file into the big chamber where Ares is only to see that his fight with Michael is over and Michael is dead. Baroona comforts him, and then the boys pretty much defend Michael’s body from that jerky guy who killed Gohu’s love interest. Because Michael was a dick but still their friend. SHONEN MANGA VALUES!! Anyway, yeah that’s basically it. Michael’s dead, the war’s over. Icarus is still king. Life goes back to normal.
UNTIL PRESUMABLY A FEW MONTHS/YEARS LATER when we next see Baroona in a stupid cloak and weird ass mask standing on a rooftop and looking over some guy giving a bounty on the Red-Eyed Swordsman, Ares archnemesis. And that’s where the scanlations stop so that’s the point I’m taking Baroona from. Yup.
PERSONALITY:
First and foremost, Baroona is a fighter. He's been raised as one and is completely capable of doing what he must in order to survive. He doesn't really see anything wrong with killing, so long as it's on a battlefield and no one has surrendered. If they have surrendered, or if the killing is off of the battlefield, then yeah, something is wrong. Baroona doesn't really believe in killing innocents, just people who deserve it, or people who are trying to kill him.
That being said, it should not be misunderstood that Baroona does not like to fight, because he does. He really does. He knows he's good, and tends to get annoyed and agitated when people look down upon him or ignore him. As the manga progressed, he got better at it concealing it because he realized that someone out of all his friends had to remain calm, especially with Ares going off and killing everyone and everything in anger.
That, perhaps was Baroona's biggest turning point in the manga. When Michael betrayed both he and Ares, it seemed cause Baroona to have a reality check. Suddenly, there weren't three of them anymore. Or more importantly, suddenly Ares was without his main support: Michael. The effect this caused on Ares made Baroona mature. Sure, he would still joke around just as much as he normally did, but his main job was to protect Ares, not from other people. But from himself. This, along with his guardian-like relationship with the little girl from Oakley Manor, has revealed a motherly quality about him. Baroona can be protective of the people he cares about, but not really in a way in which they'll notice.
In regards to his attitude, Baroona tends to have a rather nonchalant demeanor. He tends to lean more on the reserved side. Though he does talk and joke around, he only does it with the people he cares about. It's how he was raised to act, since growing up as a gladiator, it wasn't really a good idea to make friends. Who knew? The next day, you might have to kill them. It's a method of thinking which has stuck with him over the years and continues to do so. Luckily, Ares managed to bring him out of his shell a bit, allowing him the chance to joke around and you know... have a friend. Which must have been nice.
In addition to his reserved state, Baroona is fiercely against anything that is even remotely related to slavery. Holding someone back because of their social status? He's there to defend them. As an escaped slave, he recognizes the value of freedom and is willing to ensure that other people are allowed the right he was once denied. A good example of this is with Clara, the little girl from Oakley Manor.
On the subject of Baroona's views towards life, he's just like Ares. He lives in and for the moment. It's a view that fighters are accustomed to, since they can never be sure if there really is a future after the next battle.
Lastly, his quirks and precious items. Baroona feels like he has a certain obligation to some things. Most of these obligations are tied with things left behind by his Master, Marino. For instance, Marino told him to smoke, and ever since then Baroona hasn't stopped smoking. Marino introduced Baroona to his weapon and now Baroona doesn't fight with anything else. The only quirk Marino didn't introduce to him was Baroona's habit of spinning his weapon extremely fast when he's intent on fighting. It's hard to pinpoint whether or not it's excitement or anger that fuels the habit, but he tends to do it whenever he really wants to go out and fight something.
POWER:
Since Baroona does not have any powers in canon, superpowers will be totally new to him. I plan for him to have three powers, one defensive, one slightly offensive, and one just because it'll be funny.
The first, purely defensive power he will have is enhanced agility. This is different from enhanced speed in the sense that... well. It's agility. His reflexes will be faster, his senses more acute and well-trained, and he'll experience a good 20% increase in his dodging capabilities. This power would be a minor one, simply allowing him to remain an excellent fighter in a completely changed world. This power will always be 'on', so to speak, and will likely feel normal to him.
The second, semi-defensive power, is a bit more complicated. His second power will be the power to make any weapon he touches indestructible. He can only do this with whatever weapon he is holding, which will mostly be his dual-dagger-tied-by-unbreakable-metal-thing. The power will only be activated when he takes the weapon out with the intent to use it. For example, if he was just showing someone his weapon and took it out of it's... bag, it would not be indestructible. If he was taking it out with the intent to fight with it, it would become indestructible. So, in short, it's triggered on by his intent with the weapon.
Lastly, he will have the same abilities of a technopath, but his powers will be very limited. In fact, they're so limited that he can only "control" kitchen appliances . Even then, the term "control" is used loosely. In regards to controlling the kitchen appliances, he can only do so by thinking thoughts such as "I'm hungry" or "I would really like some meat right now." When thinking these thoughts, random food-cooking or food-storage devices in the closest kitchen will open or turn on. If it's the stove, the burner will turn on. The microwave will microwave nothing. It's a power that is extraordinarily useless, though I suppose it could be honed to some type of use later on.
[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:
[The comm turns on to the sound of the wind whistling. Like a blade is cutting through it. It's like that for a minute or so, the only sound being the whistle of the wind, then the sound of a long exhale. A moment more of the wind. Then, finally, a male voice starts to speak. Calmly, but with a sense of agitation.]
It doesn't take three months to figure out this isn't Chronos. Or Isiris. Or anywhere I should be.
[The whistling stops and a faint 'thunk' is heard. He pauses in his speech, and the faint sound of footsteps can be heard walking away from the microphone. A moment, later they foot steps return and the whirring noise continues.]
Thought it was a dream at first. Kept expecting to wake up. But I didn't. And three months is a long time to dream.
[His tone grows more and more serious as he speaks.]
I want to know where I am.
[Thunk. A brief pause. This time there are no footsteps. Only a soft grunt. Barely audible. Then the whirring continues.]
My country doesn't look like like this. [Thunk. Pause. Whir.]
Other countries don't look like this. [Louder thunk. Longer pause. Faster whirs.]
So. Where. Am I.
[A loud thunk, and then a crack. The familiar sound of a falling tree branch. Not a heavy one, but one that's big enough to still be audible. The whirring stops. The voice waits for the branch to fall completely before speaking again.]
I spent three months figuring out how to use this dumb thing. I want an answer.
LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:
There was nothing more discomforting than being in a strange land with strange people, and Baroona was finding this out firsthand. He thought he had seen strange things before (like how Gohu became a B-Rank, or that one time Ares actually refused a Crapit pie) but here everything paled in comparison. Here there were people who could fly like crows in the sky, or possess the powers that only gods deserved. Here there were no walls surrounding the "city", no gates, no guards. There were no mercenaries, no Chronos, no Red-Eyed Swordsman. Instead, there were strange contraptions that mimicked the speed of wolves and carried the force of elephants. Everything was new, nothing was the same.
Except for the sky. The sky always stayed the same. The clouds were always clouds and nothing more. It held a simplicity that Baroona appreciated. It was something he always had appreciated, even back in Daraak. Every time he finished a fight, the sky was there. Looking down at him as he looked up at it. When he was a kid, he would pretend that it was a window, allowing him to look down on people in a village somewhere. He even dreamed about it; colorful dreams where he was free of the shackles, and the armor, and the jeering crowd, and the stench of the coliseum.
And then he escaped. Or rather, then he grew up. Joined Temple Mercenaries, met Ares and Michael back when Michael was good. He had been surrounded by the sky then, and after awhile it seemed less glorious. It lost it's charm. Or perhaps he was too preoccupied by the company of friends to have noticed it.
But here he didn't have friends. None that he would trust with his life. He was back to being alone, though he didn't really mind. It just made adapting that much harder. After all, he had so many questions but so few contacts. Often he wished that Ares was with him, drawing people towards him with idiotic statements and childish naivety. Other times, he wished for Robin and his quiet reliability. Sometimes he would even wish for Douglas, if only to have someone to tease. But he didn't have them. No matter how hard he wished, they weren't here.
Still though. He had the sky. And on days when the sky was clear of clouds, he would go back to those days when he thought the sky was a window and peek down and make sure everyone was okay.
FINAL NOTES ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:
Even though I’m taking him from a later canon point, his personality pretty much stays the same because there’s… not that much character development in Ares. This is why there are no changes to the personality section or anything other than the history section.
