The Sandman: Preludes and Nocturnes, The Dolls House, Dream Country
Neil Gaiman

I was pretty into comics books for a while there in middle school and the beginning of high school, before I discovered that you were far more likely to get date if you were a music nerd than a comic book nerd. I dropped out of giving a shit about them for a long while, but am starting to dabble in reading in the genre again. When you get home from twelve hours with the law books, it’s hard to get excited about that Akil Amar book you’ve been meaning to read.

Sandman is of course one of the classics of the modern graphic novel. Odds are if you give a shit about the medium, you’ve already read them. Hell, even if you don’t give a shit about comics, you’ve probably read them.

Reading the series from the beginning is really interesting. You get to watch the writing develop. The first installment, Preludes and Nocturnes, is really not very good. By the third, Gaiman is hitting his stride and the scripting and dialogue is among the best I have read in comics. The only sustained criticism I have is that the art seems so dated to the late nineties. Is there just the nature of the comics’ medium? Will they always betray the time period in which they were drawn?

Since the new year, I haven’t picked up a graphic novel, hell I’ve barely picked up a book. I am going to have to change that.

PS -
For those interested in the numbers, I read 38 books in 2006, which is less than average for me. But what can I say? It was a busy year. This year is looking to be even busier, and I’m behind schedule, better get to reading.

PPS - Snow Day! Lots of posting going on!!!
