Oldschool Gaming

Today I had the urge to play one of my old DOS games. I chose 'One Must Fall 2097'. Well, all I can say is that this game is simple yet brilliant.

The game was released by Epic Games in 1994. It's a classic fighter. Although it doesn't take a die-hard gaming nerd to recognize that this game was heavily influenced by Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat it's still something unique. It's an entertaining brawler with robots.

The game design is pretty decent for the time it came out. The graphics tend to get a bit blurry but it all works pretty well. The gameplay is nothing short of satisfying. If you hit your opponent very hard, you will see bolts and metal shrapnels flying through the air. The sound effects you hear when you hit something are authentic and add perfectly to the visuals.

The level design is very neat. In some arenas there are special "Hazards" like spikes, fireballs or army jets that cause damage if they hit you. Sometimes you can use them for your advantage. There are 10 robots with different fighting styles and skills from which you can choose. Each of them has special finisher-moves that can completely destroy your opponent, leaving a big pile of metal and bolts. I have to admit, that kind of reminds me of Mortal Kombat, but then again it's different to see robots doing that stuff.

I'm really hooked on the music. The game-score features rich synth-tracks that are smooth and catchy. Some of the tracks even sound like oldschool Industrial. My favorite is probably the one of the Desert-Arena.

I remember playing the game more than a decade ago as a kid. I always had a good time playing it, yet I just forgot about. One Must Fall 2097 truly deserves the label "Unsung Hero" - Nuff Said!

8/10
