He plays hotshot detective Jake Peralta and she's rule-abiding Amy Santiago on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Think they're like their characters? Think again. The hilarious stars of the Golden Globe-winning show gave us a tour of their L.A. set and some inside scoop on their lives - all while trading their usual cop costumes for some chic and modern classic styles in our January fashion feature. ANDY ON MELISSA:
There's a certain sweetness and squareness to the way she plays comedy, and I mean that in the best possible way. There's something very genuine about Melissa.

The Best Advice from Mom:
My mom's a real sweet lady, but she's from Manhattan. Everyone thinks she's this angel, which she is, but she's also, like, no-BS. She taught my sisters and me to be kind, but also to trust our instincts. I think that's something that's served us really well.

On Growing Up With Sisters:
[It taught me] to be comfortable around women. What it didn't teach me was how to hook up with girls. You learn how to make them all want to be your friend, for sure, but it took me a while to grow into the romance part. (For the record, he married musician Joanna Newsom in 2013.)

Most Meaningful Compliment He's Ever Received:
My folks telling me they're proud.

Whom He'd Trade Places With:
A sleeping person. Just someone who's asleep all day. I'm tired.

MELISSA ON ANDY:
The first day of rehearsal, I was intimidated, because I'm a big SNL fan. It was like, Holy crap, I'm working with Andy Samberg. He turned out to be really nice, so then I thought, Oh, this is awesome. Now he's my friend. He's a nonstop idea machine; Andy's brain is constantly going. I'd expected this zany, crazy, energetic type of guy, but he's actually very laid-back and sweet.

About Their On-Set Bonding:
Andy and I talk about our relationships [with our spouses]. When working long hours, we say, "Oh, I miss my husband" and "Oh, I miss my wife" - stuff like that, friendly banter. It's definitely a common ground we enjoy discussing.

Her Hidden Talent:
I was a serious dancer all the way into my late 20s, and I was pretty fierce. Like a little ballerina contemporary-modern chick.

Why She Kept Our Shoot a Secret:
My mom has gotten GH forever; I grew up with it. There aren't too many magazines with which I have that connection. I haven't told my parents yet [about this shoot]. I want to surprise them!
