Well, I've certainly been out of communication for a while, haven't I? There is so much--so SO much--and I think it might take a while to get anywhere with it. Here are some basics:
Tomorrow is the last day of my first week of classes at UBC. I've been here for a little over a week; two weeks ago I was frantically sorting and packing in the late-summer California heat. Last week I had about three days of mostly useless orientation events. On Tuesday I had four hours of training in how to be a TA. Yesterday I had my first extended conversation with my research supervisor. It is possible that I'll be working with this really cool drought-tolerant Texan-coast endemic,
silverleaf sunflower (it's also the second picture
here). Also yesterday I had my first Italian class. I've met the two cats in the house--they are grumpy old men who still like to be petted. I have a Canadian cellphone and a UBC-provided bus pass, but still no bike. I think I'm really going to like living in this city. You should come visit me!

this album is the lists (because I am waiting to burn it after I free up some space), but it is absolutely fantastic. Also, if you like the Mountain Goats, check out
this and
this (on the music player).
