The thunderstorms last night in Portland were astounding. 600 lightning strikes is what they said. I got to watch the whole thing from under a tree in a park, it was just beautiful.
There was a big story happening as well, my friend Jenn the biologist (class of 2002) has this sister, see, and her sister has babies sometimes, and the most recent one appeared during the middle of the thunderstorm. Those guys are one of my fake families in Portland sometimes, and now there's a new one. Extremely joyous.
The Reed online groups have reliably produced some of the most rude and insensitive people on the entire internet alongside all the nice genius people and it makes it very confusing to interact with them publicly sometimes. In the end the biggest problems I have with the school, and they are big, came from the internet. I wonder why people are surprised that the place gets its reputation trashed in the local media sometimes after all the trashing of reputations they provide themselves. I've lost track of the things people have called me, "hobo" I almost don't mind so much, but when people said I was coming to shoot all the students or that I was trying to molest people despite basically being some kind of eunuch is when I realized the place was going to get taken down a few notches. If Reedies online trying to build a public image for the school have no respect for the facts, how can they expect the facts to treat them nicely?
