From Meknes we took a taxi to Volubilis, formerly the westernmost outpost of the Roman empire. Today it is inhabited only by the caretaker (and his donkey), except for the daily crowds of tourists who come to wander around taking photos and the Moroccan men who come to guide them. We only had about an hour wandering before we had to get back to Meknes for a train, but we easily could have stayed three.
Note Sara for scale in the right corner.
What I liked best isn't pictured here: the birds and the flowers. There were pheasants and little song birds and bird of prey and big noisy black birds, and little daffodils and lilies and asters and narcissus. And it was green and cool and beautiful.
Then we got back into the taxi, drove back to Meknes, and got on the train to Marrakesh (the Marrakesh Express!). Contrary to expectations, it was close to empty, comfortable, and quiet. We got into Marrakesh in the evening and successfully bargained the taxi drivers to charge us a reasonable fee back to our hotel.
The next morning we had a few hours before our flights back to Europe, so we went to the Jardin Majorelle.
And then we flew away.
