hey!!! that is something to consider isn't it?!?! i would love to do that with you, sista! the only thing is, to be really honest, i am a very fluid thinking and progressive Muslimah... a lot of other Muslims sadly are not that way (at least most of the ones that i've encountered were not). this isn't to say that there aren't other more open minded Muslims out there (you sure seem to be cool too ;) ), but most of the ones that i have met were not too open or fluid in their Islam.

you know how that goes... if you form an Islamic community (feminist or otherwise), people usually do one of two things:

1) join the community enthusiastically (but only number a few) to support the cause, and very little, if any, dialogue takes place after that (as i'm sure you noticed in the "freewaymuslims" comm).

or...

2) many people join and bash the thing (comm) all to hell with their stifled, stuffy, conservative, tired views.

i swear sis, i am not normally so pessimestic about people or about life in general, but these are my honest opinions. what do you think babe? do you think we could start something good and worthwhile in this vein? Insha'Allah :) maybe you can sway me ;)

Well, of course, I am more interested in the progressive side of Islam... That's exactly why I'm new to it; I'd always avoided anything so restrictive as a Religion! I was raised Catholic, which makes half of me want to run away from religions, screaming. But *something* attracts me to Islam. (Aside from my husband, haha.)

Anyway, I found islam_feminism. We're too late, I guess! But if this one turns out not to be so hot, we can set up our own. ;D

Take care!helene.
