I was browsing through the videos on youtube, trying to find Rent vids, and I stumbled upon this production. I have no idea where Oxnard is, and who the people responsible for this crap sacrilege are, but seriously, I will have to bleach my eyes and listen to the sounds of whales to get back my inner peace after being subjected to this monstrosity.
The first vid that I watched was
Another Day. Boy, Roger here seems like an abusive bastard, where as Mimi's a spineless pussy. Next.
You Okay, Honey. Cringed when Angel was played by a woman, who is clearly a woman, not even trying to convey that the Angel character himself is a man, who also happens to be a drag queen. If Angel were to be played by a women, I'd expect her to be in drag, as a guy, who then does a Connie & Carla and embodies the spirit of a drag queen.
Take Me or Leave Me makes me weep a thousand buckets. I discovered that Mark is literally a narrator, with an un-Mark quality. "Roger & Mimi were fighting because Mimi took drugs." Okaaay. "Collins & Angel were fine, but we have to remember that Angel has AIDS." Excuse me, and Collins doesn't? And of course, here's when the other shoe dropped. "But Joanne & Maureen, the SISTERS, wouldn't stop fighting..." WTF? WHAT? All the 'baby's' are exchanged with 'sister'on Maureen's part. Seriously, it just doesn't work. I mean "Folks would kill to fill your shoes... sister"? No. A bucket of nos. Even the actors themselves seems to feel uncomfortable by the change. The vibe that they were giving were clearly the Joanne/Maureen vibe who were clearly lovers in the original, but they had to mouth 'sister' for every now and then. Although, in Joanne's part, the 'baby's were still intact, and it seemed to me that the Joanne there was pissed at Maureen to pass them off as sisters instead of just admitting that they're lovers. Oy. I feel uncomfortable just by the incestuous idea watching them. Will need to watch Idina & Tracie going at it a thousand times to replace the horrors.
But wait! There's more! I was wondering how they did La Vie Boheme, and I got
this!. They changed "to faggots, lezzies, dykes, crossdressers, too" to "to brothers, sisters, yes, moms and dads, too". *head desks*. This is not an interpretation. This is butcherism. And er, yeah, I think these people performing also know the original play, because they also seem uncomfortable with their version of the song.
I think that's all the fake-Rent I can stomach right now. But knowing me, I'll probably torture myself later on and watch the remainder of the vids. Or maybe not.
The spirit of Rent is about family, friendship, tolerance and acceptance, especially among the 'different' and the outcasts. If you're gonna produce this play, you better be conveying the message in it's entirety. Seriously, if you're gonna leave out the homosexual relationships and other controversial issues that this play is also about, just do the world a favor and don't produce the play. Oh yeah, what's with the portrayal of the women having the 'troubled issues' while the men being the saints? Machismo much?
And, funny how the comments function is disabled. Yes, rabid Rent fans will hunt you down for the sacrilege. I pity the fool.
