I can't decide which of the moments I witnessed last night were more moving: sitting giddy and tearful with my housemates as we watched Obama deliver his acceptance speech, or watching a drag queen lead a crowd of Seattlelites in singing the national anthem. (Seattle last night looked a little like
this.) Something happened last night that won't happen again in our lifetimes. It's amazing to be alive in this unique moment in history that's so full of possibility.
I can honestly say that last night was the first time in my life that I have been truly, deeply, and profoundly proud to be an American. I am so proud of and grateful to all of the people who voted for, volunteered for, and devoted their time and energy to help elect President Obama.
I spent my year in Switzerland either lying by claiming to be Canadian or confessing my nationality with a cringe and a profuse apology. I can't recall how many times I explained to people that a sizable minority (now the majority) does not agree with the warmongering, xenophobia, intolerance, and selfish individualism that has characterized the Republican party. And it's over. The era where millions of people felt isolated from and afraid of a government and leaders who do not share their ideals is hopefully over.
Congratulations, Mr. President.
