Death Becomes Him (AU)
Part 7/?
Pairing: Fernando Torres/Daniel Agger
Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction.
Summary: Sleep has a surprise for Fernando.
A/N: Sorry this took longer; I had written this almost a week ago and just never had the time to upload. Work gets in the way of the most important things. :-)

He isn’t running away from Daniel, he isn’t, but far above all personal agenda is duty, and Fernando is duty-bound to his aspect, and his aspect tells him to wait. So he waits.

Daniel just makes it hard to wait. And sometimes, Fernando wonders if things had been the same with Death, but he knows he had never called to Death like this, yet he had been taken. And now Daniel calls to him in dreams, and he knows just how easy it is to take him, yet he can’t. Or he won’t. But maybe he should.

“I have a surprise for you.”

Fernando turns and Sleep is at his side, a distinct glint in her eye.

“What is it?”

“A surprise,” she insists as she motions for him to follow, and he does. He follows wordlessly as they cross realms, and it is only then that it dawns on him.

“No.”

Fernando knows it is him who had spoken, but it sounded so strange to him. No. What exactly does he mean?

“Hmm?” Sleep mumbles distractedly, her focus on the men before them now.

“I said, no,” he says it again anyway, his voice level. Still, Sleep keeps her eyes fixed on the men, on one man in particular. Fernando feels something knotting in him as the familiar sensation of the dream creeps into him.

Something about it is not right.

“Don’t do it,” he speaks up again, this time an edge to his voice.

Sleep turns to him slowly, her expression unreadable, her aspect already having taken over. “What is so wrong about it?”

He falls silent then, thinking over the question. He turns to watch things begin to unfold before them, and he sees Daniel’s eyes glazing over. He is awake, but he is dreaming. Something about it is definitely not right.

“It is day,” is all he could say.

“So it is,” Sleep answers simply.

Fernando watches as Daniel, in a sort of trance, moves his limbs as if he were awake. The man with him is oblivious. “Something bad will come of this.”

Sleep quietly turns back toward the men, watching with Fernando as Daniel draws on the other’s skin, an image beginning to form from the ink - the image a vision from his waking dream.

“What is it about this human?” she asks after a while.

Fernando feels the knots inside him tighten as he recognizes the image taking shape.

“Do you love him?” she asks again.

Daniel is drawing his eyes from the dream.

“Brother Death loved you, but you never loved him back.”

Fernando turns to her, but she keeps her eyes on Daniel. “Yes,” he says then, either to the question or to the statement, but Sleep doesn’t ask. Instead, she continues:

“He had said it’s impossible to both want a man you love and want him alive and well.”

Daniel’s waking dream ends, and the other man, ink drawn on his skin of an image he doesn’t want and doesn’t understand, is furious.

Fernando feels his own aspect, Death’s aspect, stir inside him. It gives him a rush of want, of longing, of excitement, but also of dread, of panic, of fear.

“I guess you would have to make a choice too.” Sleep faces him fully then, her expression more sympathetic now as her aspect simmers down.

“What about Fate?” he asks, glancing back at Daniel briefly before looking away completely.

“Brother Death never let Fate tell him what to do. He took you when he wanted to.”

And Fernando knows very well just how easy it is to do just that himself.
