Death Becomes Him
Part 5/?
Pairing: Fernando Torres/Daniel Agger
Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: This is fictional.
Summary: Fernando muses about Daniel's death wish and dream.
A/N: This part just about gave me cramps from having to write and rewrite just to get it right. I hope it's at least passable; I can't wait getting it out of the way so I can already write the next part, which I'm actually excited about. And oh, a Gaiman-ish character is introduced; pardon me for the comparison - I know I'm not worthy. If we have Fate (Destiny) and Fernando (Death), who do we have next?

Fernando has to stop for a moment as the familiar sensation tugs at his being. Daniel is dreaming of him, again. He lets the feeling wash over him. It’s like being in two realities at once - the scenes of the dream playing out before him even if he’s not really in the dream itself. It isn’t long, though, before he hears a voice beside him.

Curious dream, isn’t it?

Curious, indeed. It’s essentially the same dream always, over and over, almost every night. Yet Sleep always asks him the same questions.

Don’t you think Fate would’ve already asked you to claim him by now?

It isn’t time.

But he’s practically begging for it.

And maybe he is, but…

Daniel had said ‘no’.

That was years ago, and maybe you shouldn’t have listened.

Sleep, Death’s little sister, watches him for a moment then returns her attention to the dream.

She’s actually more sympathetic than anything, Fernando knows, but she hasn’t been gracious with what little sleep Daniel has been getting. Not since all those years ago when she had charitably given away sleep for the wounded little Daniel, at Fernando’s behest.

And so Daniel dreams more than he sleeps, if that is possible at all, yet Sleep claims it’s what her aspect dictates.

But this dream, it’s something both troubling and intriguing. Fernando can’t help but hear the thoughts and feel the emotions running through Daniel as he dreams, and he is both a spectator and a hostage.

He is both a spectator and a hostage to Daniel’s life.

He was there when Daniel was nine and had fallen from a spindly tree, getting nothing more than a scratch on him. He was there when Daniel was twelve and the frozen lake under his feet had begun to crack but didn’t break, which it did for the kid next to him. He was there when Daniel was sixteen and a thug had brandished a knife at him in a fight, the thug never getting the chance to strike even as Daniel lunges freely at him. He was there as Daniel had taken risk after risk, dare after dare, fight after fight.

And just the other day, he was there as Daniel revved his motorcycle straight toward an oncoming truck, swerving away at the last minute.

But Fernando can only do as much as watch, somewhere between anxiety and excitement, as none of these incidents called for him to interfere. Not once since the plane crash did he feel his aspect being summoned, and so Daniel continues to live - cheating death, defying death, courting death - and Fernando continues to watch.

And sometimes, yes, he would wonder, as Daniel’s life and Daniel’s dream circle around him: Should he have listened when Daniel had said ‘no’?

But he asks instead, Will you let him sleep tonight?

Sleep is quiet for a second, but then she shoots a strange, almost suspicious look toward him.

He always wakes after the dream, and he always does the same thing after waking.

And with that she turns away, and Daniel wakes.
