A/N: This is also a short update; I'm just trying to get the introductions out of the way before the main story begins. Thanks for reading!

Daniel was a child of seven when he had his first brush with “Death”.

The plane had crashed. He and his family had been flying home from vacation, and he had been tucked under his mother’s arm, sleeping away his queasy stomach. He awoke to the screaming and his mother’s arm tightening around him. Everything had happened very fast. He awoke again and he was already on the ground, fire and wreckage around him, pain all over his body. He wanted to cry and call out to his mother, to his father, to his brother, but he wanted more to go back to sleep. But -

- his mind was racing. No no no no no…

He felt a chill in the air, a chill that seemed to stop a couple of feet in front of him. He looked up and he felt himself shiver. Someone was watching him, but no one was there.

No no no no no…! His mind was screaming now. He stared at the heavy air above him, and years later he would remember feeling a strange mix of fear, awe, and boldness. But his young mind couldn’t understand it then.

His thoughts were in a jumble, as if someone was briskly going through them. He was bleeding and in pain, but all he could feel was his skin prickling as a seemingly solid mass of air brushes past him. He briefly remembered this movie his brother once made him watch, where the guy described feeling the same thing in a ghost hunt. He wondered then if his brother and his parents were ghosts now.

The strange feeling had eased, and suddenly he could feel again the pain on his sides and on his leg and the stickiness of something running down the side of his face. He began to cry.

He awoke again later at a hospital, strangers’ faces looming above him. The doctors would eventually tell him, after his relatives (soon to be guardians) had arrived: he was the only survivor of Flight 214.

The day they tell him the news is a blur, as are the next few days, even months. He would have trouble sleeping, dreaming about faces - his mother’s, his father’s, his brother’s, the doctors’. Sometimes he would dream about eyes. The doctors would call it post-traumatic stress disorder, but they can’t clearly explain the eyes. He would see the eyes vividly in his dream, chocolate brown and kind, and sometimes he would think he can also see a face, but that vision always fades away.

Only much later would he know. Daniel was a child of seven when he had his first brush with Fernando.
