Song of Kali by Dan Simmons
Read for a club thing, did not disappoint. I felt like every chapter should have ended with an announcer saying, "Brought to you by the Calcutta Tourism Board!"
Un Lun Dun by China Mieville
Good...ish. I should state that it's clear that I am not this book's intended demographic. It jumps all over the place and never quite finds itself. Great creativity and detail, but overwhelming. Fast read.
A Darkly Beating Heart by Lindsay Smith
I don't usually fall in love with a book after reading the synopsis. Usually a book's promotion is buried so deep under name dropping and review quoting that you can't get a feel for it. A+ for this one because I grabbed it, devoured it, and loved it. In a world where so many are compelled to make everything nice and bright, it's great to read something lovely and dark.
Wideacre by Philippa Gregory
I love Philippa Gregory. I truly do. But I'm only 150~ pages in...and I don't want to read it anymore. It's not even a question of comfort zone (see Song of Kali above); it's a question of continually asking why.
After searching the internet for a reason to go on (as one does in life), I have discovered that it is actually the first book in a trilogy (oh gods why) and this very well done review:
