So there are these girls that form a club called the Hero Club, which serves as a community service sort of organization. One day, they discover the app on their phones makes them magical girls, and the leader knew about this and all the rules all along. Hijinks ensue.
The animation is well done, and the battle world is very colourful...but man this thing is rife with plot holes. I waited and hoped this point or that point was just something to come up later. Nope.
I don’t know that this anime ever found out where it was going. There is the overall story arch, which I get, but episode to episode had no cohesion. And it wasn’t a fun mix of genres; it was utter hodgepodge. We’re going to have this huge epic battle...and now it’s time for fun at the beach!
And there were soooooooo many times I thought of Madoka Magica. SO MANY. We’re clearly cashing in on Madoka Magica popularity. For my own sanity, I won’t go into it, but one simple internet search revealed to me that I am not alone in this opinion.
Do I even want to get started on the girl in the wheelchair? Yes, I think I will. So when she is normal, she is mostly passive, all woe is me for being in the chair, thereby taking the ablest mentality that disability = worse thing ever how can you even call yourself human. WHICH I HAVE ISSUES WITH. I was ready to go all black girl from East Oakland if her disability was magically cured after transformation, but instead they elected to give her this really cool tentacles that kept her upright. So they didn’t go too far the rabbit hole there.
I’ll give them points for a good twist at the end. That was cool. But I won’t be saving my money for merch from the franchise any time...well, ever.
