Checking in; week

Dec 09, 2014 16:43

I took yesterday out of court to get a head start on this week. I didn't get quite as far through prepping cases in advance as I'd hoped.

I went home and found Leo with a large amount of what seemed to be blood on the white ruff on his neck (he's a tuxedo cat). He appeared entirely unconcerned, but when I pressed paper towels to it, they kept coming away with fresh red stuff, which led me to believe he was still bleeding from somewhere on the neck. It was after 9pm so I took him to an emergency vet. He had two puncture wounds in his neck at a distance from each other that suggested feline canine teeth (pun unavoidable) -- clearly he's been fighting with Otis next door. £300 later, he has had the fur on the affected part of his neck shaved, had it all thoroughly flushed out, and is set up with antibiotics and painkillers.

I won my very first substantive judicial review today. Appearing for the first time before a real (deputy) High Court Judge, to argue against experienced Treasury Counsel, wearing my wig and gown, and it being the first time I was appearing alone (without co-counsel) to argue whilst robed, was nerve-wracking to say the least. Winning was nice, but the whole thing is a bit distracting to be honest. I've got quite a bit more work to get through today.

I have to try to prep both tomorrow's and Thursday's hearings and draft and print skeleton arguments before going home tonight because I'm not going to have any time tomorrow to prep for Thursday. I have an appeal in the morning, a conference in the afternoon, and a choir rehearsal in the evening.

It's my birthday Thursday, also, so I'd like to get a good night's sleep on Wednesday. That knocks out any thoughts (if I had had them) of coming back to chambers after the choir rehearsal (which in any event finishes at 10pm) to work then.

birthday, choir, work, the bar, cats
