To clarify my previous opinions - I am in the lucky position of not having to make the choices Israel is having to make right now. I am also in the lucky position of NOT being a random civilian in Gaza. From my lucky position, I have the luxury of being able to say that I have no idea what the best thing is for Israel to do in this situation. I just don't have the information necessary, I am not a gifted tactician or military historian or politician. All I have is sympathy and a belief that Israel is trying its best to balance protection and morality. I do not believe Hamas is trying to do this.

While obviously Abbas has some positions I disagree with, he genuinely seems to care about bettering the lives of the Palestinian people, and he seems to have a good idea of how to do that: 1) ensure a rule of law (e.g. police force); 2) build up an economy and standard of living; and 3) go for peace over ideology.

I agree. Moreover, even the most gifted of tacticians, military historians and politicians have errors of judgment and disagree with each other. None of them have all the answers. Certainly we can't.
