I'm also at rather a loss to understand why Hasbro seems to be putting quite so much energy into EQG, to the extent of a theatrical launch, when even FiM hasn't received such prestigious treatment.
I think they're trying to go after a new demographic there. MLP:FiM has got younger girls covered, as well as older folks (say, ages 20 and up) of either gender, but they're probably missing out on the teenage girl demographic.
Someone observed that Equestria Girls appears to be intended as a direct competitor to Monster High, and I think that makes a lot of sense. And the fact that it's based on MLP:FiM is mostly unimportant, then: the connection really just provides a convenient hook of familiarity and draws in people who might otherwise be reluctant to consider an entirely new franchise.
Still, I'll give EQG a try - it's got a good crew on it, after all, so if anyone can make something of this misbegotten concept, it'd be them.
Indeed; we got the best crew in the field working on this, and I think we should give the movie a fair sporting chance. If it's bad, we'll still be able to say so after watching it, and with more justification, and if it's good - hey! All the better.
