After reading more of Bill Bryson's Short History of Nearly Everything, I'm not certain that I would ever want to try escargot.
Apparently, there is a class of organisms that don't neatly fall under plant, animal, fungus, or bacteria. They are referred to as "slime molds." They're actually neat, adaptable little creatures. When conditions are favorable, they are able to exist as single-cell organisms. However (and this is often the case), when conditions aren't favorable, these "slime molds" combine to create slugs. Add a shell, and what do you get?
That's right motherfuckers. SNAILS!!
So, who wants to admit to eating what basically amounts to boiled slime mold?
