Be Polite, Please, People!

On Courtesy II (among other things)

I was always taught that when I had a disagreement with someone, or they'd done something which upset me, that, if I felt it was important, I should go try and sort it out with them.  Courtesy.  Obviously this doesn't apply in Blogland where, a couple of times now, the only notification I have received that I am suddenly persona non grata on certain people's sites, is the little line "Bronchitikat is banned from commenting in the journal".  Polite?  I didn't think so.

So I posted, anonymously but signed, asking quite what I had done to deserve this banning.  The American graciously replied saying that it wasn't her choice (she's a minor), the Englishwoman hasn't.  Standards are slipping all over, even among those who went to my old school!

So the drill is, Dear Readers, if you find one of my blogs, or comments, upsetting or offensive, and it really does matter to you - get back to me, politely.  Please.  I duuno, what is the world coming to?  Fancy having to specify such a thing!

I did think, having done me twenty lengths yesterday morning, then NOT going to bed for a nap in the afternoon, I might have slept last night.  Particularly when, having found myself starting to drop off during "Have I Got News For You" (9-9.30pm), I did the sensible thing and was in bed before 10pm.

But no, I was up again by 11pm, sleepless, & a bit stiff from all that swimming!  Better to give in & get up then than lie there tossing & turning til even later.  So I made some peppermint & chamomile tea & got on with reading a Star Trek book, til I knew I'd sleep.  Funny thing, this concept of parallel universes - provided no end of possibilities for Sci-Fi writers.  Personally I think their existence, outside of Physics theory & Sci-Fi, is unlikely.  People are too important to be so replicated.  After all, if God thought it worth sending Christ to die for us then people must be important.  We aren't all guys in Red Shirts!

A while back, like a few years now, we got a fairly hightly rated, all singing, all dancing HP printer/scanner/duplicator.  It was wonderful for a while.  More recently the 'printer' part of the function has been less reliable.  Those of you who remember what I ramble on about, thought why should you, will know that I didn't have a poem to present at last month's Poetry Workshop as I couldn't get the machine to print it.  It promptly started spewing copies when H came home & switched on that evening - three hours too late!  Still, it means I shan't have to write another for this coming Weds - just have to locate the ready-printed copies!

H has been fighting with the machine for the past couple of days.  He even looked up the website - only to find that this "my printer has suddenly, randomly, & for no apparent reason, stopped printing" thing is a common fault.  The overall impression he got, he said, was that HP only services Mac users cos it has to.  Hmmmm, time to get another, Mac friendly, printer?  In the end he switched everything off, unplugged the printer cable from the USB port, plugged it back in, left it for a couple of minutes then switched it all back on & Lo!  It prints.   Quick, get the letter posted!

Apparently, given wisdom is that if a peripheral fails to work you should unplug it from the USB port & plug it back into another.  H, who knows something about these things, reckons that the simple act of unplugging & replugging back into the same USB port should have the same re-setting effect.  I'll let you know the next time the printer goes on strike!  I've also made sure I know which bit needs unplugging etc.
