Big Night In

Apr 23, 2020 12:46

As well as the now weekly Clap for Carers, tonight the BBC is putting on The Big Night In for the NHS and Comic Relief.

Which is entirely right and commendable.  Not to mention entertaining.

Listening to Scala Radio today, various companies are advertising that they will match fund any donations raised "up to £1 million"

Seriously, multi-million pound-worth, multi-million-pound profit-making businesses - like HSBC, Barclays, and even Sainsbury's - are going to match fund "up to £1 million".

The Big Banks are rolling in it.  The are still collecting debts - from people who are often 'furloughed' (and may be on 80% pay if they're lucky) or have no jobs.  They're probably also lending more money to said people, at interest.

As for Sainsbury's - it's a supermarket chain for goodness sake.  It's a multi-million pound supermarket chain.  It's a shop.  It's OPEN.  People are buying food there.  Heck, various supermarkets were saying that they'd had 'equivalent to Christmas' business at the beginning of the Covid Crisis and Lockdown as people panic-bought.  Doubt they'll be showing a trading loss this year - unlike many other businesses.

And they're going to match fund "up to £1 million" what ordinary people give.  What ordinary people give freely.  Generously.  Often from their limited incomes.

And after 99 year-old Captain Tom raised at least £27 million for the NHS by walking round his garden 100 times.  At least he made an effort.  As are the BBC and all those involved in the show - actors, 'clebs' presenters, camera crews, lighting crews, sound crews, cleaners, etc.

I AM DISGUSTED!

I may well tell Sainsbury's, HSBC, Barclays et all so.

I might also make a cake, for all it's the warmest day so far this year.

Come 8pm we'll be out clapping (might even bang an old saucepan!)  We might then watch the Big Night In - if I can generate sufficient interest from the rest of the household!  We may well donate - after all, NHS and charities supported by Comic Relief are well worth the effort and need the money.

Y'all stay safe, stay in if you can, wash your hands with soap, help slow the spread of That Virus, and have a good day now!
