Monday Mixture

In the end I decided not to do any painting yesterday.  In hindsight I can see that this wasn't the best of choices.  Yesterday H was at home and would have helped me move stuff so that I could access the other walls.  Ah well.  I shall have to try working around the stuff today.

So what I did do was sit around knitting.  The slipover for S is almost finished but I must remember to only steek with 100% wool yarn.   I must remember to only steek with 100% wool yarn.   I must remember to only steek with 100% wool yarn.   I must remember to only steek with 100% wool yarn.   I must remember to only steek with 100% wool yarn.   I must remember to only steek with 100% wool yarn.

Some of the Fair Isle was done in sock yarn, 75% wool, 25% nylon.  100% wool yarn is naturally 'sticky' and 'grippy' and every stitch and strand will hang onto each other tightly when you steek a piece of 100% woollen knitting.  OK, so you have to protect the cut edges, but they will stay put.

Sock yarn, containing considerably less wool, is quite happy to slip out from the cut edges and, if you're not VERY careful, you could end up with a fringe!  No, Dear Reader, this hasn't happened to me, yet.  So I'm now waiting until I can get to my sewing machine, so I can put a couple of rows of stitching along inside the cut edges to hold them.

I still think it's easier, if not that much quicker, that trying to knit Fair Isle back and forth, having to purl rows and still follow the two-colour patterning.

Did I mention I had a Dental appointment, for the first time in 6 or 7 years, yesterday afternoon?  The taxi there was quite fun.  The driver told me about his venture across the Solent, for Sunday lunch at Bembridge, with his friend.  They sailed.  He is an experienced sailor, as is his friend, so he checked the weather forecast etc, etc before they left.

Apparently up at the top end of Portsmouth Harbour it was bright, sunny and flat calm.  When they hit the Solent - six-foot swell and strong nor'easterly wind!  If it gets much worse than that the hovercraft ferry is grounded, though it's fun in those conditions.

Just as well he and his friend were experienced sailors.  They got to Bembridge, thoroughly chilly.  Cos it was so nice in Portsmouth they hadn't taken jackets or jumpers.  They had a nice lunch, then got a bit wet coming back.

As 'twas, it was an experience, they got there and back, they had a nice  lunch, they didn't need the services of the RNLI, and they're both now more experienced sailors!

Right, the Dentist.  I shall not write about the litany of 'caries' and 'retained roots'.  Let other keyboards dwell on guilt and misery (to misquote Jane Austen.)  Suffice it to say that, in seven years, I've accumulated a lot of dental 'stuff' too, which needs working on.  Lots of x-rays were taken and plans made.  I've three more appointments before Christmas, to get started on things.

Apparently my teeth were not as bad as they might have been.  I've had an electric toothbrush (a good one) the past couple of years and that's helped.

The good thing about having these appointments is that there is a Dry Cleaners near the dentist.  They have an offer on washing duvets.  So I shall attempt to be organised and get our duvets washed while getting my teeth sorted.  See, Dear Reader, silver lining!

I'd put H in charge of dinner last night.  So we had a Texas Barbecue Pizza with chicken strippers and potato wedges from Domino's.  They were nice.  Then, to really up the dental caries, he came up with a chocolate cake with salted caramel sauce!  That was nice.  We didn't look too hard and the 'High in Sugars, Fats, Saturates, Medium Salt' labels.  We didn't look at the Calories/Joules label at all!

Tonight I'm back doing the dinner.  We'll be back on the vegetables.  It's ok to eat these things (pizza and chocolate cake) provided it's very occasionally and you're only 60 once.

Afterwards I got on with knitting the Weasley Sweater for Friend J's daughter R.  I've cast off the right shoulder, will do the other tonight.  Then there's the neck to finish, the sleeves to do and an 'R' to embroider on the front.  It will be ready in plenty of time for Christmas - all being well.  Hmmm, should I take a leaf from The Yarn Harlot's book and do myself a spreadsheet with people, garments and times by which they have to be finished so I know where I am and on what I should be working and when?

Right, I'd better go arrange these roses H gave me and the chrysanthemums from a friend.  Then there's the painting.  Again!  Ho hum!

Y'all have a good day now!
