'Gone' But Not (entirely) Forgotten

Recently an elderly man died in the city.  He lived alone.  His body wasn't found for three days.  Apparently he'd told a neighbour that something like this might happen to him.

Turns out he had served in the Royal Navy for twenty years.

An appeal was put out over the radio and social media for people attend his funeral to 'give him a good send off'.

100 people turned up.  One of the local MPs sent a wreath thanking him for 'his duty and service to the nation.'

Which was 'nice' of them.  I suppose.

Personally I think it would have been far better for one or two people per week to have turned up at Gordon Burgess's home to visit him while he was still alive.  You never know, he might have appreciated it too.

I occasionally tell people that rather than wasting money on flowers at my funeral I'd far perfer them to give me the odd bunch occasionally.  When I've 'gone' I shan't be around to appreciate them.  Heck, I'll be in the presence of Almighty God - that will be so much better than even the most exquisite flowers.

Just a thought.
