Rain, Rain

I mentioned that it rained yesterday.  Hard.  In places they got a whole month's worth of rain in six hours, in a few places they got it in two.  Naturally these places flooded.  Yes, we have drains, we even have storm drains, but either they were put in back before Climate Change kicked in, or more modern buildings were erected with insufficient infrastructure, and possibly on areas prone to flooding anyhow.  That's why they'd not been built on until recently.

Maybe it's time for Planning Authorities to insist that not only should every housing development contain a decent proportion of 'affordable housing' but also Really Big Drains and other ways of accommodating heavy rainfall.  Cos the way things are going the potential for flooding is only going to get worse.

I mentioned the A/M27 on Tuesday.  The A27 is still closed at Shoreham while they continue to clear up the wreckage from Sunday's air crash.  The rain is not helping examiners, it washes details and evidence away, down what drains there are.

The other end of the A/M27, near Titchfield, it rained so hard that the underpinnings were washed away and a sink hole appeared in one carriage.  Evidently the Bright Spark Planner didn't envisage rain in the torrential, Tropical downpours we've been having this week.  There were mutterings that the whole A/M27 really needed rebuilding from the bottom up.  In this place it will be, from well below the bottom.

I'm not sure what the weather has been doing in Discworld*.  I know rains of bedsteads and sardines (in tins) have been known in Ankh Morpork.  Quite whether this kind of thing extends as far as the Chalk is another matter.  What is sure is that there will be no more Discworld novels.  Sir Terry Pratchett finally succumbed to Altzheimer's six months ago. Today the final novel, The Shepherd's Crown, is published.  It all ends with Tiffany Aching, and probably the Nac Mac Feegles.  Yes, there were lots of other stories partly written, but Sir Terry never wanted them released.  I think I'll wait a bit before purchasing my copy.  Discworld is something people didn't want to end, but it has.

The series started as a parody of Fantasy Fiction and developed into well-observed satire on life in this world.  On war - Jingo, on feminism (and war) - The Monstrous Regiment, on policing - practically anything with Sam Vimes near the lead role.

Ah well, everything comes to an end.  Even this flooding rain.  Schools start back the middle of next week.  You just watch, Dear Reader, the sun will come out and those poor pupils will be stuck in classrooms.

Y'all have a good day now!
