Solstice
Yup, it's that time of year again.
Shortest day, longest night etc. Wonder how many froze the night away by Stonehenge - as opposed to those who froze the night away at Heathrow! And, as in one memorable year when I was in Bath, it looks like being a really short day today. Fog! That Shortest Day in Bath (Somerset) the fog had settled on the hilltops & I swear the streetlights didn't go off all day. w00t! for electric lighting, for all it's contributing to global warming.
Of mice & men, & fat ones at that. Do not go rushing off to have your gut flora obliterated & replaced. You never know, the Firm****** bacteria (& what a name for bugs which appear to contribute to making you fat!) may flourish in the gut of people on high-carb, high-fat diets, & decrease in the guts of those on better diets. Or they might not. So we'll just have to continue cutting our portion sizes, (except of brussels sprouts) & walking places, or even running. Which might also help the planet.
Speaking of which -
recycling in Britain has helped cut carbon emissions. Now if we could just get Portsmouth City Council to take recycling seriously, cos there's far more recyclables than the present paper, cardboard & plastic bottles, which they take at present. Glass is also recycled, which is daft cos they could just as easily reuse a lot of it, as with milk bottles, & you have to remember to take it all to the bottle bank. Hey ho, H made a 'deposit' yesterday on the way to find lunch!
Of course, whether the carbon reduction is sufficient to compensate for the fog is another matter. Now at first glance one might think that
stopping planes flying would also cut carbon emissions - but many of these are internal flights, & people are driving instead. Stay off the roads, if you can, the traffic is even heavier than it would normally be at this time of year (& that would be heavy), & there's fog, & ice. Meanwhile a lot of people are having their pre-Christmas, of Christmas breaks really mucked up. The ones I pity are those who happened to land in the UK for transfers, specially if they've been sent to wait in the tents! Good thing Santa & his reindeer don't need Flight Control & Radar! Or will that be an excuse used by parents who've not managed to get The toy/game this year?
After a bright start the fog finally caught up with us yesterday, good thing I'd gone out Wednesday! In fact by lunchtime the foghorns were going. Occasionally we get reminded that we are actually near the sea! The fog persisted overnight & it's still around now. The Met Office reckon we're stuck with it for another couple of days.
So if you're travelling remember to take warm clothes, a good book, plenty of knitting & large supplies of patience, cheerfulness & politeness. The transport staff are only trying to do their jobs & they've been getting 'attitude' from too many other travellers, probably. Y'all have a good day now!
