Quick Rant
I just watched last week's episode of CSI, and while it was a really interesting episode, it had a huge problem that I just can't ignore. One of that characters was British, and they treated him like they would have if he wasn't deaf. What I mean is, they had him be completely fluent in ASL and made note of when he messed up, like if he was fluent in English and then randomly spoke French. The problem with this is that British Sign Language and American Sign Language are completely different languages, they don't have anything in common at all. Spoilers to follow.
In the end he was actually not deaf and was in fact from Canada, which may have its own sign language for the Anglophone parts, as he was Anglophone but signed a regional language that was French based. So, basically, this guy needed to be fluent in three sign languages to be a credible character, which I think is a bit much work for a scam for a half million dollars. Most likely the writers didn't know about the fact that signed languages used in an area rarely have anything to do with the spoken language in the area, which pisses me off because they did so much research for the episode yet missed a huge thing. Anyway, that is my beef with it.
