Tonight I saw a couple metal bands: Christian Mistress and Tit Pig.
CM are from Olympia and reminded me of early 80s European metal bands like Mercyful Fate and even Judas Priest. They seemed like the real deal. I didn't pick up any "we used to be into Every Time I Die until we bought a Manowar record because we thought it was ironic and now here we are" vibes. They're a younger band (late 20s) and I'm guessing they legitimately listen to metal. Also, they have a curvy girl singer who was great. I point out the singer's sex only because a female playing metal is so rare.
Tit Pig were exactly what I wanted them to be! Fast, vulgar and combative punk/hardcore in the vein of Born Against and other mid-90s hardcore. The music's simple but I love the energy and the crowd lost their mind. They have a little cublet for a drummer and at one point he got the mic and gave a shout out to all the bears in the audience. "This is an open invitation to all the bears to come abuse my ass after the show. I'm not kidding." I talked to him afterward and thanked him for the shout out. He was cute. *sigh*
This was my 35th concert this year. I keep a list of the bands I see each year on my profile page if you want to check them out. Looking at my calendar I'll probably be going to 6 more before years end: Bob Mould, Kylesa, Buzzov*en, Neurosis, Agalloch and I guess Big Freedia but he's just a dude w/ a microphone and some beats. When I was working full time in music I would easily go to 8 - 10 concerts a month. I'm glad those days are over.
