I'm not a good researcher, quick to come up with URLs to illustrate points when typing replies, so forgive me if my comment leaves you wanting references and/or causes you to dig for information. Geekbrief.tv has a number of episodes that touch on various software apps for mac, pc, iPhone, et al., dealing with twitter. One impressive app I saw managed large group of tweets that were being followed by various categories (friends, business related, etc.) and looked jazzy.

Apparently, when there's some event going on that several people are attending, some of whom are journalists with twitter, it is worthwhile following them. This is just one example of the service being useful. It seems to be an emerging property of RSS meeting real-time blogosphere, aggregating information into digestable chunks so the otherwise information overload is obviated by its tweet design.

However, there are abuses and idiotic uses of twitter, much as we have idiotic waste of the internet's storage and bandwidth today. I guess the most humorous satire on the service is from SuperNews.
