Of Jello and Shinigami

She was giggling again, a familiar sound with that faint change in her usual laughter, telling him that yes, indeed, it was that time of day.

Ishida glanced up from his book, finding her immediately as she sat near the window, humored by something Tatsuki was saying as she twirled (or tried to twirl) her spoon in a bowl of... something.  Apparently it was hard, as the spoon wasn't moving very much at all.

"But it's so funny," she said blissfully, as Tatsuki's rather resigned glance finally grabbed her attention.  Ishida's lips wanted to twitch with amusement; no one could shake Inoue-san out of her amusement, seeing as no one could really see what she found to be humorous.

"All I said was that this was the most normal lunch you've brought to school in the past month," her friend replied dryly, absently rubbing the back of her neck.  "Even if it's still not pretty normal.  I mean, gummy bears in a happy-face jello?"

Ishida's brows rose; that certainly sounded interesting.

But he kept quiet, despite his urge to look into the bowl.  Inoue-san had the most... unusual lunches, and he'd even developed a taste for them.  Sometimes.  Seeing as she always found a way to come over and offer him some.

After the first fifteen refusals, he'd learned to simply partake, no matter how odd the mixture.

"A happy face!" Inoue-san bubbled gleefully.  "You see a happy face?  That's so..." Giggle, hiccup, "funny!"

Then she turned, noticing Ishida's glance and smiling brightly.  "Do you want some?" she chirped, grabbing the bowl and dashing across the room, heedless of the three people who quickly dived out of her way (avoiding a dashing Inoue-san was a talent of all students in the class... except his).  "It's pretty good!"

He looked into the bowl she proffered, feeling his brow wrinkle.  It certainly looked like a happy face, so...

"What is it?" he asked, watching her face fall a little and feeling suddenly like the lowest slime on earth.

"It's a Shinigummy," she explained in a stage whisper, disappointment clear in her eyes.  "See?  It's orange, for Kurosaki-kun's hair."

Ah, right.  Kurosaki.  Of course.

Which would explain the... no, no, it certainly did not explain that smile.

"He's growling," she continued cheerfully.

Ah.  While smiling?

"He always growls the worst when he smiles!"

Ishida certainly hadn't noticed that, which meant - as always - Inoue-san was looking a lot closer than he was.

"I'm lying," she continued with a proud little smile.  "He's actually smiling!"

And now it made sense.  "Ah.  You fooled me," he replied rather dryly, knowing that she took no notice of his tone and giggled instead - still lost in her little lunch world, which had rules of its own.

"Here, look."  She scooped a little bear out of the jello and grabbed his black marker, beginning to color in the little gummy.  "See, if you do this - and this - and this..."

Inoue-san held it up triumphantly.  "See?  Shinigummy!"

"Very good," he approved, feeling his lips twitch in spite of himself.  Then his eyes widened as she started to pop it into her mouth, and he intercepted it quickly, shoving a spoonful of jello (lacking marker) into her mouth.  "You can't eat things you draw on," he reproved sharply at her inquiring look.

"Drawing... oh, I forgot, that isn't food coloring," she said through her mouth of gummies, chewing thoughtfully.  Then she took the spoon out of Ishida's hand and shoved a spoonful of the wiggly stuff at him.  "Eat!"

He eyed it warily; it was the first time Inoue-san had tried to feed him, and... well, it was his first time shoving food into her mouth too, so he supposed it was even, but... but... Inoue-san.  Hand.  Food.  Mouth.

He could feel the heat rising in his cheeks, but he tried to lean forward and take the spoonful with as much dignity as possible.

Unfortunately, Inoue-san was always a mischievous little girl, and kept pulling it back, her eyes twinkling in amusement.

Ishida wondered which was worse; pulling back or continuing.  Both seemed rather childish.  He gathered his gumption and grabbed her wrist to keep it still, chomping onto the bite and letting go immediately.

Yes, keep it suave.  Keep it cool.

Keep that damn blush down.

"It's good," he managed to say rather casually, though his eyes didn't meet hers, and he certainly didn't see the faintly dreamy look flash into her eyes for a moment.

And she just simply replied, "Isn't it?" while hiding the little quiver in her voice.
