Close your eyes, he'd whispered, and she'd done so.
She relies too much on sight, and now she senses too many things in a rush. His hand is warm against her upper arm, and it trembles with gentle pressure. She feels wind across her face as he moves; perhaps closer - his breath is warm against her nose - then farther, when all is cold against her skin once again. The bench is warm beneath her thighs and cold beneath her fingers, resting gently beside her, and she can feel her entire arm shake.
Waiting is a trial, but she finds it sweet when his lips finally touch hers, cold - of course cold, for it is winter - with warm breath and the sweet smell of peppermints. Her back is so straight and firm that it hurts, and she cannot relax against this kiss of theirs, this first kiss in the middle of the afternoon.
They are fourteen and they think forever is easy to understand, because they are in love.
