Pretense

Comments: Just a little snapshot into their disordered weekends.

The fourth house on the block was always the noisiest when weekend came. It was hardly a quiet neighborhood to begin with, being quite normal and overrun by several children and overworked housewives, and yet that house always seemed to have the busiest atmosphere.

Their closest neighbor found it quite strange, really, for the husband and wife couple who lived there were hardly loud party types - yet every weekend several cars would pull up to the drive and drop off people throughout Friday evening, until it was filled with chatter and laughter, arguments and hilarity. Yes, the Morinozuka household was strange, indeed.

Aware of their neighbors' thoughts (and most sympathetic toward them), Haruhi glanced over the impromptu party and sighed before slipping into the kitchen, thankfully unnoticed. It was quieter here, the semi-silence only broken when someone came for another drink or bag of chips. Everyone seemed to be laughing and happy, which was odd to her; these were all rich daughters, used to caviar and other expensive things, yet they were genuinely enjoying simple things like tortilla chips and guacamole dip. It made little sense, really.

The kitchen didn't even look like hers anymore, every counter covered in things Tamaki and the twins had dragged over. It was as though the host club had not ended after high school - it moved into their living room, instead, and didn't have the luxury of a cleaning crew. Sighing, Haruhi began to gather the empty cups.

"You don't have to do that."

Her husband had snuck in behind her, making hardly any noise as he moved. He was by nature a silent man; silent in words, silent in movement, silent in argument. Thankfully he had a tendency to snore, or Haruhi would be up half the night checking to see if he was alive.

"Not enjoying the party?" She didn't turn around as she responded, simply grabbing another cup and tossing it into the garbage, unsurprised when he moved to help.

"It's just pretend." One of his hands rested gently on her back as he separated trash from food at the counter. "They only bring them because they need an excuse to see you."

Brows lifting in amusement, Haruhi didn't argue with her unusually verbose husband, knowing his words to be true. It was as if the rest of the host club didn't think they could see her outside of some sort of club-like activity; in that aspect, they were still children. Especially as they didn't realize her irritation at seeing girls cling to her husband like that--

Haruhi shook her head sharply. She was hardly a jealous creature. Truly. But between their work and school schedules, the weekend - usually a Sunday - was the only time they had for each other, and now for the past three months it had been taken over by impromptu host club meetings.

"It's only pretend," he murmured against her ear once again, with that uncanny ability to read her mind.

Leaning back, Haruhi gave a slight shrug and another soft sigh, glad to feel his arms wrap warmly around her. "Should we make them clean up before going home tonight, Takashi?"
