Summary: Ellone realizes what her powers could have been.

It wasn't a bridge, she'd found. It was more like a window.

She'd hoped to be able to walk across time - walk through the hazy shadiness of that river she swam in nightly - and find herself staring at her own child-self from Laguna's mind. She'd hoped to have some kind of control. She'd hoped to convince him to stay. She'd hoped he could have heard her. She'd hoped a lot of things.

Then, when she found she couldn't talk through the others into Laguna's mind - or, that they could, but she couldn't - or, that she could, but Laguna only counted it as a dream, or faeries - she'd realized that she'd failed, and that her powers weren't a bridge at all.

Then she'd wondered, and tried it again.

She'd hoped that using the mind of his own son - oh, Squall, I'm so sorry, you never knew! - would have somehow subconsciously made Laguna more aware. That perhaps the presences of the future-born - Laguna's own flesh and blood and kin - could somehow convince him to stay when no words could reach him.

He hadn't known. Hadn't known his own son in his own head. He'd laughed, and called it faeries again.

It was just a window, or one of those screens that played movies: you could shout all you wanted, but no one in that little world could ever hear you.

She didn't understand. She could speak to Squall, and Squall could somewhat be heard by Laguna; why, then, had the bridge never connected? Why couldn't she change the past?

It wasn't until Ultimecia that she'd known. Ultimecia could. Ultimecia had a bridge. She could use the Junction Machine and reach through time and control pretty Matron, turn her into evil and cold-eyed Edea. She could reach through time and possess Rinoa, make her release that ugly cruel Adel. She could spill her will into Adel and make her wage war on continents.

Ultimecia could, because her will was strong enough.

Ellone couldn't, because she wasn't willing enough.

Once she'd realized the potential she had - the fact that, if she'd tried harder to dominate, she could have, Ellone threw up. She could have invaded Laguna's mind through Squall. She could have made him stay. She could have controlled him. If only she'd tried harder.

She could have been a bridge and not a window. Just like Ultimecia.

It made her ill, and she thanked the gods she'd never been that strong.
