Summary:
She hated thinking about the first time they met, mostly because Damcyan was directly in the shadow of when her world had ended: too close to the night she'd decided to trust her mother's killer. (Rydia wondered, sometimes. She knew now that Cecil had been the right choice for the good of the world, but she couldn't help but wonder - really - whether her mother's soul was watching from the Farplane, cold and angry and betrayed.)
Crybaby, she'd called him, because it had made her feel better: she was all of six, and she was really too little and scared to cry, too dried up with emotions whose names were too big for her to say. She had cried when her mother died, but then she'd gotten angry: pulled a Titan out of the deep abyss in her mind and rearranged a mountain range. The prince just ...sat there. And sobbed. And the fact that he wasn't angry - not at all - didn't want revenge - it had made her feel so much the petulant child. So she called him names, yelled at him, anything to get him to stop crying like she thought she should be.
Rydia watches Edward now, tall and noble in his sorrow, a soft inspiration to the remnants of the nation of Damcyan: he is still not angry. She watches him wear the quiet dignity and bravery he learned from Cecil, and realizes suddenly that he is stronger - because he does cry.
