The first morning she wakes alone for the first time ever, and wants her mother; her mother was always there, always, in the mornings.
The second morning she wants Cecil, because her mother’s gone: Cecil kept her safe, and always told her where they were going and why. This empty room has no place for her, not like Cecil did.
The third morning Rydia realizes she will always wake up alone, now. It sits in her stomach like rocks. She thinks: this must be how grown-ups feel when no one is looking.
She wipes her eyes, because grown-ups don’t cry.
